Restoring your iPhone

Monday, July 20th, 2009

One of the most commonly asked questions by iPhone users who want to jailbreak their iPhone is:

“Is possible to recover if things go wrong?

Yes you can

Please note the step-by-step guide involves restoring your iPhone so you should be aware this would mean that all your personal data from your iPhone, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data will be wiped out and your iPhone’s settings will be restored to their factory settings. However, you always have the option to recover your personal data from the backup.

Here is the step-by-step guide to restore your jailbroken iPhone:

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. If things had gone horribly wrong while hacking your iPhone and iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.

2. You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode

(this is required only if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone)

Connect your iPhone to your computer.

3. Turn iPhone off.

4. Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).

Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps

(observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized. A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone. In the Summary Tab, click on the Restore button.

iTunes should prompt you if you would wish to take a backup of your iPhone before restoring. Select Backup.

After the backup is taken select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you.

Once the restore process has completed your iPhone will restart and the Apple logo will appear while booting up.

After the restore is complete and your iPhone restarts you will see the “Connect to Activate” screen. You must continue to keep your iPhone connected to complete activation.

The last step is to set up your iPhone either from a backup or set up as a “new iPhone”. Setup your iPhone as a “new iPhone” or you can select the date of your backup that you want to restore from. You can always follow the above procedure to restore from a backup at a later date also.

To transfer a file to the iPhone simply locate your local (on your computer) file using the left pane. Then navigate to the desired location in the right pane. Drag the file from the left pane to the right pane to copy the file to your iPhone.

**Note**
As user dlr stated, it is a good idea to set auto-lock to never. You can do this by going to Settings>>>General>>>Auto-Lock and set to never.

If your phone isnt already jailbroken its going to need to be for this to work.

once you have that finished (should take about 10 minutes or so) open up the “cydia” app.

*hit manage tab
*hit sources
*hit edit button in top right
*hit add button in top left

when box comes up add this link:
http://cydia.hackulo.us

*hit add source
once it adds the repository
*hit done in top right
*click the Hackulo.us section in added by user.

you must install in this order:
1: miPatch Firmware 2.2.1
OS 3.0 needs AppSync instead of miPatch!
2: Hackulous Security
3: Installous

once you’ve finished downloading those close cydia app, locate “Installous” app (green button with a 2g iphone icon).

*browse
*click on an app you like
*scroll down to bottom and find download section
*go to the iphone friendly section
*whenever you get to where the download is starting go ahead and hit install rather than download (saves you time)

when your viewing apps it will say they cost money but that is just the App store description they DO NOT cost anything and are the full versions of the app. ***SCROLL DOWN TO BOTTOM***

once its done with the install of the app you can either continue to browse around (there is no limit to how many you can download) or exit out of the “installous” app and try out your new app.

HERE ARE PICS OF THE PROCESS, IF YOU GET CONFUSED OR JUST NEED SOME REASSURANCE ON WHAT TO DO.
